Here is another great example of ground penetrating radar technology at work. For this project the customer wanted to do a simple core drill through the deck. After performing a concrete scan, it came to light that not only were there two unknown conduits detected, but also a beam. this was all marked out and labeled, thus allowing for a smooth and safe core drilling operation to take place.
Utilities In and Directly Below Slab-On-Grade
Vertex GPR was called out to scan a slab on grade that was going to be saw cut. As can be seen in the picture below, there were multiple utilities in and directly under the slab on grade. These utilities were marked with each of their depths labeled on the surface as well. This allowed for precise cutting and safety. This is a perfect example of where ground penetrating radar is able to be optimized to its fullest. X-ray, while a great technology, it cannot image a slab on grade.
Utility Locate
Vertex GPR was hired to locate utilities on a private commercial property. Vertex GPR used ground penetrating radar and radio detection to perform the locate. The picture below is a portion of the property that was scanned. The red paint and flags denote electrical lines and the yellow flags and paint denote a gas line.
Unknown Utilities
Vertex GPR was contacted to conduct a scan for underground utilities in a small courtyard. Within this small area, an unknown electrical line was located along with three other unidentifiable lines that were approximately 18" below the surface. In some scenarios (like this one) the type of utility may not be able to be determined, but its location can still be marked, thus allowing for the contractor to daylight it.
Post Tension and Rebar Deck
Vertex GPR was called out to scan a portion of a deck prior to anchor bolts being drilled. Using Ground Penetrating Radar, Vertex GPR located and marked out rebar and two post tension cables that were in the area. Additionally, each item was labeled with their depth from the surface of the scan.
Conduits Directly Below Slab-On-Grade
A contractor was planning to saw cut out an area of slab on grade. This area is delineated by the orange marks seen in the picture below. We were asked to scan the area using ground penetrating radar prior to the cut being performed. What we found is that the slab did not contain conduits. However, we located 4 conduits directly below the slab. The location of these conduits were marked, additionally the depth of each of the conduits were labeled next to them.
Communication Line
Vertex GPR was called out to perform a sub-surface utility locate on a private property. Utilizing electromagnetic detection equipment, Vertex GPR successfully located a communications line in the back of the property. The line was flagged and the contractor was notified.
Close Call?
Even with a simple soil bore project, there's always risk of the unknown. Fortunately in this case, the customer called us out and the two electrical lines that are shown in the picture below were detected. The soil bore was moved and successfully drilled in another location.

Private Utility Locate
Vertex GPR had the great opportunity of performing a utility locate for a large contractor that was planing to excavate for a retrofit. As can be seen in the picture above, the subject area was in the midst of the property's main utility corridor. Having this information prior to excavating can save time and create a much safer work environment.
Post Tension Cables, Rebar and Conduits!
Vertex GPR was able provide valuable information to one of their customers who was trying to determine on where to place a core. After scanning with Ground Penetrating Radar, it was clear that there was PT cables, conduits and rebar all within the location in question. The items were clearly marked and labeled so that a confident decision could be made.
